Course Description

This course provides employees and organisations with a clear understanding of their responsibilities under Australia’s Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Participants will learn how to correctly collect, use, store, and disclose personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), and how to apply those obligations when using AI tools at work. The course also covers the recent privacy reforms, including the statutory right for individuals to sue over serious invasions of privacy, substantially increased penalties, and the automated decision-making disclosure requirements commencing December 2026.

  • Learn rules governing use and disclosure, direct marketing, cross-border disclosure, government identifiers, data quality, security, access, and correction.
  • Understand consent requirements and legal exceptions.
4. AI, Automation & Personal Information
  • Identify the privacy risks created by AI tools, including storage and reuse of anything entered into them.
  • Apply a step-by-step process for safe AI use, and understand the automated decision-making disclosure rules commencing December 2026.
5. Breaches & Consequences
  • Review real Australian privacy breach case studies and analyse how failures to comply with the APPs led to legal, financial, and reputational consequences.
  • Understand current penalties, regulatory action, and the statutory right for individuals to sue over serious invasions of privacy.
6. Everyday Privacy Habits
  • Learn practical, everyday actions to reduce privacy risks and human error.
  • Includes safe email handling, document management, system access controls, and what to do if you suspect a breach.
